Voodoo Doughnuts Opens at Universal City Walk Orlando

Well first off, hello! I am new writer on this website but not to the Disney/Theme Park fandom by any stretch. My name is Brad Hughes, I am the host of Some Orlando Junk (formerly The Daily Disney Blog Podcast) Jedi Talk, and The Gentleman and the Scholar. I am excited to be covering Universal Orlando on this here site. With all of that said, lets get into why you clicked on this article.

Voodoo Doughnuts was one of the rare places that its reputation proceeds itself, another place of similar clout is In and Out Burger. Before you even take a bite of the doughnut you already have a standard in your mind of what its going to be. However, does this live up to the hype? Well……YEAH it does.

Voodoo Doughnuts started in Oregon back in 2002, and has slowly added locations over the years. When they opened the location in City Walk in Hollywood, Orlando locals held their breaths, hoping we would finally have a local Voodoo Doughnuts.

Now lets jump to 2 weeks ago when I finally got my hands on these divine, glorious doughnuts. In true Orlando spring break fashion, we waited in line for 30 minutes to get these doughnuts. Quite honestly, the wait was not a bad thing, this gave us plenty of time to narrow down which doughnuts we wanted to grab.

However once we were inside our dreams were slightly dashed. Most of the doughnuts we wanted to try were sold out. Voodoo was in a testing phase so this type of thing is to be expected. But we did get an iconic pink box with a few of the ones we did want to try in it.

The decor inside is very zany and very unique. There is something they do in every store that I find hilarious. Each individual store has a “spirit animal” and it is usually someone famous who is from that area. This locations “spirit animal” is none other than Carrot Top. He is perched up above the registers and the doughnut cases, very cool, very humorous addition.

First up lets go with the one I was the least excited about. The Maple Bacon Log. I am not a fan of sweet and salty, generally speaking. However, this one was one of my favorites, that I have gotten every time since. Yes I have gone more than once, we will get to that in a moment.

Secondly, since we couldn’t get all we wanted on this trip, we just got what was available. The little pink doughnut with marshmallows is called the Neapolitan, its a cake doughnut and its, fine. Moving on to the sprinkled one on the top right under the pink one in the picture is called Sprinkle Cake. Once again its a cake doughnut that is fine.

Lastly, mac daddy, the OG, the Michael Jordan, The Beetles, The Led Zeppelin of doughnuts, The Voodoo Doll. I don’t think I have to explain which one that is, but just for the sake of being obvious, its the one shaped like a voodoo doll.

Now, I grew up a ride or die Krispy Kreme person, and thought no one could ever change my mind, and then I took a big bite of that voodoo doll. The first bite was one of shock and amazement equal to the shock of me liking the maple bacon one but only more so. I was so surprised how much I loved this doughnut. The pastry is perfect, the icing is the right amount of chocolaty without being too sweet. It is the only doughnut that for me can beat a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Seriously do yourself a favor and grab one of these on your next Orlando Trip.

Fast forward again to a week after that first trip to Voodoo, we finally got our hands on the other ones we wanted, and they weren’t as good. We tried two of the ones with cereal on them, the Oh Captain, My Captain and the Triple Chocolate. Doughnuts with Captain Crunch and Coco Puffs respectively. And I wouldn’t say they are bad, its just an off sensation, biting into a soft fluffy doughnut with crunchy mouth mutilating (we have all ripped the roofs of our mouths up on Captain Crunch) cereal on them.

We also tried Dirt, which is Oreo pieces on a fluffy doughnuts, this one wasn’t as jarring as the cereal ones, in fact they are seriously delicious. And last but certainly least (no that’s not a typo) was one we got from a recommendation from one of the Team Members at Voodoo, and It was called Memphis Mafia, and it was a GIANT fritter, with peanuts, peanut butter, chocolate syrup on it. It was just too much. It was tooth-meltingly sweet.

  1. Those doughnuts look amazing. One of the problems with the UK is we tend to only get Krispy Kreme or…well…nothing, and I really wish we had a Voodoo. Great write up!
