57 Ghosts: A Theatrical Seance Aboard The RMS Queen Mary – Review

The Queen Mary has been docked in Long Beach, CA for 56 years. It was retired to Long Beach after serving as a passenger ocean liner before 1936 and a retrofitted troop ship during WWII. Dubbed, the “Grey Ghost,” the RMS Queen Mary played a pivotal role in guiding the allied forces to victory. Needless to say, The Queen Mary has had a storied history and many people have stepped aboard it’s famous decks…some never leaving.

Outside of it’s major historical significance, The Queen Mary is also know for something else. That is being one of the most haunted places in the United States. There’s no shortage of stories about people’s encounters with the paranormal while climbing aboard the famous vessel. Some may just catch a glimpse of the Lady in White or come face to face with Jackie, looking for her Mother and Father. Even skeptics can appreciate the consistency and persistence of these stories that haven’t stopped to this day.

It’s been reported that 57 people climbed aboard The Queen Mary and never left. This is where the show, 57 Ghosts gets it’s name. A show paying respect to those who may reside within the walls of the Queen Mary and allowing guests a small taste of what it might be like to come in direct contact with some of the ships famous spirits.

Produced by Master Apparitionist Aiden Sinclair, and hosted by Michael Rangel; 57 Ghosts allows guests to witness and participate in a supernatural séance, set in the fully renovated and restored chamber located within the remains of the third-class dining hall. This immersive and intimate (only around 25 guests per show) show lasts around 90 minutes and is filled with moments that will give you chills.

From beginning to end, 57 Ghosts is absolutely captivating in it’s approach to telling the stories of those who’ve never left the Queen Mary. A big part of that success is because of Michael Rangel’s ability to not only be relatable but intertwine stories of happiness and stories of darkness. The whole experience felt like an emotional roller coaster in the best of ways. If you’re a regular visitor to the Queen Mary, many of the stories and moments might seem relatively familiar to you. But I don’t particularly think that takes away from the experience. We’ve been visiting the Queen Mary for years and even though we were familiar with it’s famous stories, the experience of 57 Ghosts was unique enough to keep us entertained.

At a price of $100, this show isn’t a cheap night out for a couple. But because of the extremely limited nature of the show, it’s not really that outlandish. By having small groups, almost everyone was able to participate in some capacity. Which, typically isn’t the case in bigger settings. You’re not sitting 50 feet away from the experience, you’re up close and personal with all the major moments of the show. And in it’s intimate setting, the bigger moments really resonate better and you can feel it reverberate within the group. Especially if you have a group that is truly invested. So to us, if you’re looking for something affordable, this isn’t the right show. If you’re looking to do something special and unique, this is a perfect option for those looking to add a bit of “spooky” to their night out. Add in a delicious meal from Chelsea’s Chowder House (which has stunning views) and you’ve got yourself a fantastic night out in Long Beach.

We absolutely loved our experience aboard the Queen Mary for 57 Ghosts! It took the familiar ghost stories we’ve heard and gave them more life than I think they’ve ever had! Especially with the energy of a small crowd, 57 Ghosts can be something special. While the experience might not be for everyone, it’s essential for those with an interest in the paranormal. Though be warned, while you’re reaching out to those who’ve passed aboard the ship, you never know what will reach back!

Voyage to the otherside with apparitionist Michael Rangel of “57 Ghosts” on select nights Friday – Sunday, starting at 8:00 pm. Seating is reserved and extremely limited. Attendance is not recommended for those who are recently bereaved or under the age of 16 years old.
